After a few showers near dawn along the shoreline, most of Thursday looks great, although a bit cool for the time of year. Thursday’s average high temperature is 69°, but most of Connecticut will be between 60° and 65°.

Bright sunshine will be the rule for most of the day, thanks to a patch of drier air moving overhead.

Friday is a bit more interesting—though not by much. A cold pocket of air aloft will move in, creating a somewhat unstable atmosphere. Temperatures at 500 mb will reach -30°C, which is quite cold for the time of year (the 10th percentile is -22.5°C).

Two shortwave disturbances may be enough to trigger a few showers. Some models hint at a round of showers prior to dawn and another in the afternoon as instability builds during the day.

Over the weekend, another system approaches on Saturday. Models (GFS and Euro, for instance) have bumped up rain forecasts to 0.5”–1.0”, but as has been the case with the last few systems, 72-hour forecasts for heavier rain tend to become less impressive with time.

The good news this weekend is that Mother’s Day appears better, with rain chances holding off until near or after dark. Temperatures will warm into the 70s on Sunday ahead of an approaching cold front.

Another jet stream disturbance will race through the Northeast on Wednesday, bringing clouds and periods of showers. Clouds will keep temperatures down, especially when coupled with an onshore breeze.

Rainfall totals don’t look impressive, with 0.5" or less across most of southern New England.

The trend from yesterday of keeping this system progressive and pushing it offshore has continued today. Thursday should turn into a nice day, with moisture shifting south and east.

850 mb temperatures (pictured above) will be nearly 10°C below normal following Wednesday’s cold front. This will keep temperatures below normal, although sunshine and a downsloping/offshore wind will take the edge off the cool air, with highs in the 50s in the hills and low 60s elsewhere.

The weekend forecast is coming into clearer view. This fast-moving jet stream pattern will send two disturbances toward New England. The first arrives Saturday, with rain expected for a good portion of the day. The second arrives late Sunday, bringing another chance for rain.

Temperatures on Saturday will struggle to get out of the 50s with clouds and rain, but we may luck out on Mother’s Day, with a shot at the low 70s before rain arrives later in the day.

One item of interest today in the very long range is the new ECMWF El Niño forecast released today. The model is showing the potential for an extraordinary event to develop, with very large sea surface temperature anomalies over the equatorial Pacific. Strong El Niños tend to produce warmer-than-normal winters in Connecticut. If you’re a snow lover, it may not be a total lost cause—one of the strongest El Niños on record during the 1982–1983 winter produced a significant blizzard in February.

Temperatures will reach around 80° in many towns away from Long Island Sound on Tuesday. Expect a mix of sunshine and a few clouds throughout the day. Even though it will be warm, it will also be quite windy.

Gusts of up to 45 mph can be expected across Connecticut, especially just inland from the Sound. This sounding off the GFS for Tuesday afternoon shows a well-mixed boundary layer (the air between about 8,000 ft and the ground), which will promote the mixing of stronger winds down to the surface. In fact, the wind speed at the top of the mixed layer is 49 kt, and it’s certainly reasonable to expect 80% or more of that to mix down.

A front approaches Wednesday, and with it will come more cloud cover and a chance for showers later in the day. This system looks a bit more progressive than it did over the weekend, which means two things: First, the bulk of the rain should move out by Thursday morning. Second, overall rainfall totals will be lower (generally less than 1") thanks to the system’s progressive nature.

There is a scenario, however, where the system doesn’t move as quickly and we get clipped by a wave of low pressure on Thursday. The NAM and the GFS (pictured below) show little precipitation beyond 8 a.m. Thursday, as the front moves through and drier air moves in.

The GFS ensembles, however, show a nonzero chance for lingering rain if that wave clips the region on Thursday. In fact, the odds of more than 0.5” of rain are anywhere between 10% and 20% across most of Connecticut. Not a huge risk, but not something to ignore.

At this point, plan for clouds and at least some showers Thursday, but this remains a relatively low-confidence forecast.

Beyond Thursday, the weather pattern remains unsettled, with several more chances for showers and cooler-than-normal temperatures into Mother’s Day weekend.

Let’s start with this weekend. A weak system moves in tonight, bringing increasing clouds and some showers from about midnight through early Saturday morning. This looks quite light, with most areas seeing 0.10" of rain or less.

Some high-resolution models do show a few showers lingering through midday Saturday, but I expect these to remain isolated or scattered. A good portion of the day should be dry.

Next is the coastal storm we’ve been talking about for a few days. A stronger upper-level disturbance will swing through, allowing the storm to form off the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The overall trough appears progressive enough to keep the storm moving east-northeast, generally away from southern New England and toward Atlantic Canada.

There hasn’t been much change here, with the bulk of this system remaining offshore. However, it does appear that enough moisture will wrap northwest of the low to bring a period of rain to southeastern New England, which may clip a portion of Connecticut just before daybreak Sunday.

We get a brief opportunity to warm up Monday and Tuesday as a pseudo-Bermuda high develops over the western Atlantic, with southerly flow bringing in warmer-than-normal air. Keep in mind that with Long Island Sound still near 50°, temperatures will be held down along the shoreline. Farther inland, highs will reach the mid 70s in many locations.

Rain chances increase significantly Wednesday and Thursday. In fact, there is potential for some heavier rainfall as well. The northern and southern branches of the jet stream will interact—and possibly phase—allowing a stronger storm to develop over the northeastern United States.

It’s still too early for specifics, but at this point, I’m expecting rain both Wednesday and Thursday, with the potential for heavier rates by Thursday.

The European Ensemble shows around a 25% probability of more than 1.00" of rain in a 24-hour period. That may not sound like much, but it is a fairly strong signal at a 168-hour lead time. If the storm strengthens further—depending on how much phasing occurs between the jet streams—there is also the potential for strong wind gusts. I’ll continue to monitor this.

After today’s rain, conditions improve on Friday. Sunshine will mix with clouds in the afternoon, and temperatures will climb into the 60°–65° range for most.

The weekend forecast, unfortunately, remains a bit challenging. A weak disturbance rotating beneath a large upper-level low anchored over Quebec will be enough to bring clouds and a few showers on Saturday. Rainfall totals should be fairly low—generally 0.1” or less.

Another disturbance (we call these shortwaves) right behind the first one will be enough for a coastal storm to develop off the Mid-Atlantic.

This system should pass fairly far south and east of Connecticut, but it may be close enough to bring a period of rain Saturday night. Thankfully, it should move out around daybreak Sunday.

One bit of good news: there appears to be a window for warming early next week. As a Bermuda High sets up offshore, it should help pump warmer air into the region. 850mb temperature anomalies of more than +5°C should support a brief surge of warmth. Tuesday, in particular, looks delightful, with highs around 75° inland.

Don’t get used to it. The pattern remains unsettled and, on balance, continues to favor cooler-than-normal conditions. A strong cold front will approach from the west, with rain expected Wednesday into Thursday. Currently, most guidance shows 0.5”–1.0” of rain midweek, but as seen in the Euro Ensemble, 16 of 50 members produce more than 1.0” of rain in the Hartford area.

There will be additional chances for rain later in the week, and the CPC 8–14 day temperature and precipitation outlook continues to signal an unsettled pattern through mid-month.

Rainfall totals won’t be terribly impressive. In fact, trends over the past day of model runs have come in slightly lower. The National Blend of Models has reduced the mean rainfall to generally 0.25–0.40” across the state. Heavier totals are expected both west and east of us.

It seems that the two relative maxima on either side of us are due to two separate processes. A tongue of instability in the Mid-Atlantic may enhance rainfall potential across New Jersey and Pennsylvania (perhaps a scattered thunderstorm or two), while a low-level convergence zone over Maine will enhance rainfall there.

Regardless, it will be wet later tonight and Thursday morning. Most of the rain should move out by mid-morning, with a few breaks of sunshine developing by the afternoon. Winds will gust out of the northwest up to 30 mph later in the day as we dry out, with temperatures around 60°.

Temperatures will remain cool on Friday, with highs in the upper 50s to near 60° for most areas.

While we’re in between systems Friday night and Saturday morning, patchy frost is possible in rural parts of the state. Light winds, clear skies (with a full moon), and dry air with dew points in the 20s should allow temperatures to drop to near 30° in some spots.

As mentioned yesterday, there will be an area of low pressure tracking offshore this weekend. This remains something to watch. The GFS ensemble shows the storm well south of the 40°N/70°W benchmark, but close enough for some light precipitation later Saturday into Saturday night.

The probability of >0.1” of precipitation on the GEFS has increased to around 40%, focused on Saturday night. We’ll continue to watch trends, but a reasonable worst-case scenario right now would be a period of light rain later Saturday, ending by daybreak Sunday.

Next week continues to look unsettled, with several chances for rain and a deep, stubborn dip in the jet stream overhead

Temperatures for the week overall should average below normal but I do think a day or two of warmer-than-normal weather (i.e. 70s) are possible in between systems.

What a start to the week it has been. Unfortunately, our mild and sunny stretch is on borrowed time.

Wednesday will be a pleasant day, with sunshine fading behind increasing clouds by the afternoon ahead of our next system. This isn’t a major storm, but a period of rain is expected Wednesday night through Thursday morning.

Around 0.5” of rain is expected across the state, with some locally higher amounts possible. The 90th percentile rainfall forecast from the National Blend of Models is around 1”.

I expect the rain to end by early afternoon Thursday, followed by a gusty northwest breeze (up to 30 mph) as drier air moves in.

Friday and Saturday will feature a mix of clouds and some sun, along with cooler-than-normal temperatures. Highs will be near 60°F both days, with a spot shower possible at times.

One thing to watch for Saturday is a coastal low to our south. Right now, both the GFS and Euro keep this system well to our south, so my level of concern remains low.

The extended forecast doesn’t look great. Most guidance shows a persistent trough over the northeastern United States, supported by a strong downstream block over the Labrador Sea and Baffin Bay. This -NAO (North Atlantic Oscillation) is a classic winter signal for cold, stormy, and snowy conditions, but in spring it typically results in chilly, cloudy, and unsettled weather.

I don’t see any major storms on the horizon at this time, but it may be a while before we see a sustained stretch of warmer-than-normal temperatures.

Check out the GFS ensemble precipitation forecast. About one-third of members show more than 0.2” of rain for Hartford, while two-thirds show very little, if any. Looking at a single higher-resolution model, the NAM shows an exceptional gradient.

Only a few hundredths of an inch in Windsor Locks, but 1.25” of rain in Waterbury and nearly 1.50” in Danbury. The actual gradient is likely even sharper than this, since models tend to “broad-brush” precipitation totals compared to reality.

That said, I’m quite confident in a period of rain Saturday afternoon through Saturday night for most of southwestern Connecticut. In the Hartford area, rain should hold off until around or after sunset Saturday. Areas farther north and east are likely to see very little rainfall. We may start the day with some sunshine, but clouds will increase everywhere by afternoon.

In the hills, some wet snow may mix in Saturday night and early Sunday morning but I’m not expecting this to be a big deal.

One reason this forecast is so challenging is the overall pattern, which is fairly complicated. Cut-off lows are blocking the jet stream to both our east and west.

Once the system moves to our south Sunday morning, we may not be done with it. Some models still show lingering moisture as the system strengthens slightly offshore.

We’re expecting clouds through most of the day, with morning showers, especially in the southern half of the state. Assuming things behave, we should be able to push the rain out by midday, leaving dry but cloudy conditions for the afternoon.

Next week remains unsettled. Monday and Tuesday should be OK, with seasonable temperatures ahead of the next storm system. The 5-day average upper-air pattern shows persistent troughing over the Great Lakes and northeastern United States, favoring a wetter and cooler-than-normal stretch to close out April and begin May.

It’s been a beautiful Thursday—sunny, windy, and warm across Connecticut. Temperatures climbed to near 70° in most valley and shoreline locations.

Tonight’s weather will be relatively quiet, though clouds will increase, and there’s a slight chance for a sprinkle toward daybreak as a weak upper-level shortwave moves through.

Friday will be partly to mostly sunny and not quite as warm as today. Highs will generally be between 60 and 65 degrees.

Saturday’s forecast remains a tricky one. Below are the 24-hour precipitation totals for Saturday and Saturday night around the area. The models are actually in remarkably good agreement. That said, given the very sharp gradient, a 20–30 mile shift will make a huge difference here.

I expect a rainy afternoon and evening in Fairfield County and not much rain (if any at all) in Windham County. The I-91 corridor is a much harder call, even at this juncture.

One new wrinkle that has shown up today (and was hinted at yesterday) is the potential for this system to hang around into Sunday. The European Ensemble is the most emphatic about this potential, and the Canadian model has hopped aboard. Basically, a few models show the disturbance diving south of New England and developing into a coastal low as a cut-off upper-level low develops. You can see the difference below between the more progressive GFS (which keeps the upper-level trough moving) and the Canadian (which eventually cuts off the upper-level low off New Jersey).

This would mean a continuation of clouds and rain into Sunday. At this point, this seems unlikely, but cut-off lows love to form this time of year, throwing all sorts of wrenches into otherwise solid forecasts!

Next week continues to look unsettled, with multiple opportunities for rain. The European Ensemble has an average mean of about 2 inches of precipitation by next weekend, with some members showing significantly more rain.

It’s a gloomy Wednesday across Connecticut, with lingering clouds after some morning rain. Rainfall totals ranged from a trace in the Quiet Corner to around a quarter of an inch in some of the suburbs around New Haven.

Skies will clear tonight, with plenty of sunshine expected on both Thursday and Friday. As we dry out Thursday, the wind will pick up, with gusts up to around 30 mph.

As humidity values drop and the wind picks up, there will be an elevated risk for brush fires Thursday. This is the time of year when brush fires are common in southern New England. Generally, the brush fire risk is elevated when the relative humidity drops below 30% and wind gusts exceed 30 mph.

The weekend forecast remains complicated. An area of low pressure will develop along a front in the Mid-Atlantic. A narrow band of locally heavy rain will be focused near the track of the low. Our modeling has been fairly consistent in showing that the axis of heaviest rain will remain just west, but it is very close. That said, most of our computer models bring at least some rain into Connecticut—enough to make the day damp and unpleasant.

The GFS ensemble (pictured below) shows an average of nearly 1” of rain in the Poconos and parts of New Jersey with lesser amounts into Connecticut. Overall, these numbers have increased from yesterday leading to increased confidence in a period of rain.

Next week continues to look unsettled. Sunday and Monday should be OK before a persistent upper level trough develops over the northeastern United States. This will favor near to below-normal temperatures and above-normal precipitation. The CPC outlook for days 6-10 shows this well with a wet pattern across a large chunk of the country.

Looking under the hood, we can see both the GFS and Euro ensembles from earlier today showing that persistent trough. Day-to-day and model-to-model consistency increase confidence in a wet stretch.

It was a cold day across Connecticut for this time of year. Temperatures this morning dropped to 27°F at Windsor Locks and 33°F at Bridgeport, with the former tying the daily record set in 1961.

The weather pattern doesn’t look great if you’re ready for a return to summer-like weather.

A weak upper-level system will slide through late tonight into Wednesday morning. Our computer models show up to 0.25” of precipitation across the state. At least initially, temperatures are supportive of a mix, with some snow possible around daybreak in the elevated terrain of northwest and northeast Connecticut.

After the steady rain in the morning, it looks like moisture may linger through the day, with occasional drizzle, low clouds, and perhaps some fog. Below is a sounding from the NAM model showing a saturated atmosphere in the lowest 8,000 feet.

The day really looks dreadful. This lingering moisture will keep temperatures even lower than previously thought, with most areas stuck in the 40s.

Thursday will be better. A gusty northwesterly wind (gusts over 30 mph at times) will dry us out and allow temperatures to warm into the 60s. There’s a slight chance of a passing shower in a few towns, along with some fair-weather cumulus clouds during the day.

The next forecast item of concern is this weekend. Another system will move through from the northwest, bringing some rain later Saturday into Saturday night. The question, however, is how far east this system gets. The AI Euro (pictured below) shows little to no precipitation in Boston but over 0.50” of rain in New York. Connecticut is caught in the middle.

The Euro ensembles show odds of at least 0.50” of rain ranging from less than 10% in Windham County to about a 30% chance in Fairfield County. Stay tuned.

Next week’s weather pattern looks unsettled, with persistent troughing nearby. This will favor cooler-than-normal temperatures and potentially wetter-than-normal conditions as well. Not exactly ideal for late April.
